Serie A Corner: Roma Maintain Title Challenge After Genoa Win

AS Roma are keeping their title aspiration alive ahead of the new year, following an important home win over Genoa on Monday. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side picked up maximum points that put them sitting fourth in the league standings, three points behind league leader Inter.

Roma Take Down Genoa to Keep Top Four Seat

The Biancocelesti are still keeping their positive first half of the season run as they took down Genoa on Serie A Monday fixture. Playing in front of their home crowd, Gasperini’s men immediately took the attacking initiative and found themselves 1-0 up after 14 minutes of play through Matias Soule’s effort.

Roma doubled their lead five minutes later following a goal from their star midfielder, Manu Kone. The home team sealed their dominant first 45 minutes with a third goal, this time it was scored by their summer signing, Evan Ferguson.

Genoa tried to pull out some kind of fight after the break, but all they managed to do was pull a goal back from Jeff Ekhator, three minutes from time. That win keeps Roma’s title challenge as they are sitting fourth in the standings with 33 points, though they already played one more game than the other top three teams.

Inter and Milan Remain Top in Standings

Meanwhile, the top two teams in the current Serie A standings are still both Milanese clubs, with the Nerazzurri edging their city rival by one point. Inter are sitting top with 36 points from 16 matches, while Milan are second with 35 from the same number of matches.

Christian Chivu’s men kept their top spot after beating Atalanta 1-0 in hard fough battle, while Massimiliano Allegri’s side stomped Hellas Verona 3-0 at San Siro. Those results put them still toe to toe in the standings, with Napoli lurking behind them with 34 points, also from 16 matches.
