There’s no doubt Rory McIlroy’s TaylorMade Spider putter, the winningest putter model on the PGA Tour this season, played a huge role in his Amgen Irish Open victory.
McIlroy made 160 feet of putts Sunday, including a 28-foot eagle on the 72nd hole to force the playoff he eventually won, but it was his first victory with a brand new set of wedges in the bag.
For the first time this past week, McIlroy made the switch to TaylorMade’s new MG5 wedges from his previous generation MG4s. Clearly, the new scoring tools are working.
McIlroy’s new MG5s, TaylorMade’s first forged wedges, have a unique back story that involved perfecting the shaping to match his unique preferences and needs.
Not only is the MG5 forged from carbon steel to provide an ultra-soft feel, but it also features new saw-milled grooves and spin tread technology. Those new spin retention technologies helped produce a lower launch and more spin for McIlroy, which was something he was looking for.
And as fate would have it, the MG5 just had it’s full retail launch this weekend, meaning you don’t have to wait at all to get your hands on one.

The MG5 is offered in six different grinds, which were shaken up this year to provide more options for players who desire a wedge in the mid-bounce range. MG5 has two new grinds this year in the standard bounce family, the SX and SC, to go along with the SB. There’s also the LB — which is McIlroy’s grind of choice for his lob wedge — and the HB for players who fall on ends of the sprectrum for angle of attack.
Lastly, there’s also an updated TW grind to match Tiger Woods’ specific needs for his wedges.
