Aston Villa’s defender has to make a difficult decision before the season ends by calling on retirement.
Aston Villa’s women’s side are forced to lose their player before the season comes to a conclusion as she opts to hang up her boots and retire from professional football. The defender, Paula Tomas, is still in her peak years, 24 years old, but is currently suffering a serious ongoing knee injury.
This has kept her on the sideline for long and limited her regular minutes with the Villa. This season, she only made five appearances, all from the bench, due to her non-ideal physical fitness.
The director of women’s football, Marisa Ewers, shared her view on the Spanish international during her stay in Villa Park, as reported by the club’s official site, avfc.co.uk.
“Paula has been a valued part of the group during her time here. She brought real energy every day, both on and off the pitch, and while we will miss her around the club, we wish her all the very best for what comes next.”
Paula Tomas was one of the talented stars from Spain. She was the key figure in her childhood club, Levante, from the 2020/21 season to the 2023/24 campaign. The full-back made 107 appearances and registered three goals and eight assists in all competitions.
She also helped Levante steadily finish in the top four. Their best campaigns were in 2020/21 and 2022/23 when they sat third in the final standings. In the remaining two seasons, they only finished sixth in 2021/22 and fourth in 2023/24, her last campaign before switching sides to the Women’s Super League.
She impressed the Villa and joined in July 2024. In her first season, she managed to get a nod in 17 games, plus scoring one. Her first goal came in the FA Cup win over Bristol Rovers. At that time, the Lioness ran rampant against them and came out in a 9-0 victory in the fourth round. In the Women’s Super League, they managed to finish sixth on the table.
However, her form was marred with injuries even before the campaign was over. She had to be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024/25 season due to picking up a hip injury. This season, she suffered a knee injury, which forced her to come up with such a retirement decision.
Despite her struggles in Villa Park, she has left a positive note there. The full back with two international caps has been touted as popular among the supporters because of her influential personality and highly valued by her teammates in B6.
