This gear whiz thought he knew it all. Then the pros fit him | Fully Fit 2026

Welcome to Fully Fit 2026, GOLF’s new platform for providing you with real-golfer insights into what 2026 gear might be best suited for your game. To this end, we assembled six GOLF content creators of varying abilities and ran them through the gauntlet of six full-bag fittings (driver to putter!) at six major club manufacturers in Phoenix and Carlsbad, Calif. Our hope: that you might see shades of your own game in one of our panelists’ and take some learnings and inspiration from their fitting experiences. In this installment (below), Director of Equipment for Golf Johnny Wunder runs you through his new bag. You may browse our other panelists’ 2026 dream bags here:

About my game

“Trash,” “hot garbage,” “going backward,” “hanging on for dear life,” “I feel like Uncle Rico” — all terms I would use to describe my golf game the past 4 to 5 years. There have been flashes of light over that time, but consistency has eluded me, technique is bad and, in a nutshell, I have no idea what or who will show up at any given time. To be fair, since 2021, my rounds per year have been in the 15-20 range, and dedicated range time might be once a month, mostly reserved for the time before I shoot content. The other hard thing this year was (and still is) battling a torn labrum in my shoulder that doesn’t affect my action directly, but there is a pitch count involved to keep my right arm from falling off. Getting old sucks!

The hardest thing for me is the days the game decides to show up. It’s enough to know I’m still a good player, but those days are becoming infrequent. Too many 72s followed by 82s, 83s, etc. The main issue is I’m insane. You know that old quote — doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? That’s me. But I’ll take it a step further: doing the same thing over and over again, knowing chaos is at my fingertips and doing it anyway.

Johnny Wunder at ECPC.
The author during a fitting at Callaway’s ECPC. Adam Christensen/GOLF

2026 is going to be different; I’m now relying on fitters for the clubs (not my “ideas”); I’m working with a swing coach (Drew Steckel); and I’m committed to 40+ rounds and 500 swings per week. No questions asked.

The sticks will remain “the sticks” all year. Non-negotiable. I want to play the best golf of my life in my 50s, and this year is the runway to that.

My overall grades in terms of my game:

Driving: C-
Fairway Woods: B-
Long to Mid Irons: D
Short Irons: B+
Wedges: B
Putting: A-

Lots to do.

My Goals for 2026:

Pretty simple, lay the groundwork for my best golf. Now that the bag is set, it’s all about technique-building, getting stronger and faster, but, most important, finding a way to consistency again. In my opinion, driving is the main priority, as the rest of my game seems to rely so much on that one club.

What I learned from 6 fittings in 9 days!

In a nutshell, a BUNCH! For one, I definitely know how to fit others at a pretty high level, but when it comes to myself . . . not so much.

There are parts of my game that I would say are dreadful, and what I discovered was that a few parts of my bag were working against me. Drivers, for example, have been a real journey because they were always based on my best guess or on something new I wanted to try. I’ve been fortunate enough to access and build pretty much whatever I’ve wanted for years. It’s awesome, yes, if you’re a gear dork like I am, but terrible if you are trying to play consistent golf.

I’ve frankly been playing club Whack-a-Mole for so long that I don’t truly understand what my game needs anymore. I’m in that stage of life where I’m young enough to hit great golf shots, generate speed and do all the things, but the cost of chasing that and even more chasing the reliance on that gets harder and harder. I need equipment and technology to make up the difference between being a 35-year-old dude and a 49-year-old dad. Not the same game anymore.

Johnny Wunder Cobra fitting.
The author with Cobra Tour fitter Ben Schomin Adam Christensen/GOLF

That was the biggest takeaway from this whole experience. Finding the right “tools” for the bag, as my Fully Equipped co-host Jake Morrow puts it: 14 tools that create opportunities to shoot a low score. A bag “right-sized” for where I am in my life. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

Fully fit 2026 was a hard reality check that kicks ego to the side and, at the same time, validates some of my instincts that were actually correct. I was fortunate enough to work with some elite fitters in this experience: Lucas Bro (Titleist), James Lee (Ping), Ben Schomin (Cobra), Duane Anderson (TaylorMade), just to name a few. Needless to say, I was blessed with more new nuggets than I could have ever imagined.

My understanding of what I need vs. what I want went to the next level in this process, and it excites me that this new bag is built for my game, not my whims. In my mind, I’m still the guy that can play irons like Rahm or Xander would, but in reality It won’t help me.

Ultimately, though, this series was a little less about our team’s gear whizzes — Jack, Jake and me — and more about the other three hitters: Maddi, Wadeh and especially Sean Zak who got to participate in gear junky heaven for the first time.

Johnny Wunder and TaylorMade's Duane Anderson.
TaylorMade’s Duane Anderson dropping some knowledge on the author. Adam Christensen/GOLF

The Fully Equipped crew participates in a ton of fitting scenarios all year and across all OEMs, but Sean might do it once every couple of years and definitely not to this level of detail. Watching his understanding of how this all works and seeing multiple light bulbs go off in his mind made me happy, proud and excited to continue to push him down the gear rabbit hole.

If I had to find a favorite thing of Fully Fit 2026, Sean Zak and his journey were probably it for me.

Key learnings?

Driver: Found a driver that only draws and has one miss
Fairway Woods: I was/am in a great spot
Hybrid: I was/am in a great spot
Irons: I need players’ performance (speed) badly. North to south dispersion was all over the place
Wedges: I wasn’t even close, had too much bounce in spots and not enough in the others
Putter: I was/am in a great spot
Ball: Was in a great spot, but found a unicorn

The 1 club I can’t live without

Easy. The Ping G430 4-hybrid. It’s by far the most efficient golf club I’ve had in the bag in years. The goal was to match the performance of this one with the rest. I have had few issues with the different versions of 4-irons in the past, leaning typically toward faster platforms to gap with my 5-wood. The problem I was finding was that the gapping got closer and closer to my 5-iron as I got older.

For example, if I could cruise at 140 mph ball speed year after year with a 4-iron and my 5-iron was at 135 mph, these past few years that 4-iron number kept going down to 137-138 mph. Gaps got really tight in some places and way too far apart in others. With the G430 4-hybrid, 140 mph is basically the floor with an upside (ceiling) going to 142-143 mph. Technology is being used to my advantage, and, no, I’m not opposed to going to a 5H when nature calls. I tried it for a spell last summer, and it was awesome.

Now onto the rest of my bag!

Why it’s in the bag?: Lower launch, more spin and BALL SPEED. This ball was 3-4MPH faster than any ball I tested and spun 400-500 RPM more than the others. No brainer and good to be back in a ball I know very well.

Why it’s in the bag: I haven’t seen this combination of ball speed, spin efficiency and forgiveness in one club since TaylorMade’s M2. I got consistent ball speed and spin numbers across the face, and my smash was always at 1.48-1.49.

1 Key Data Point: Ball speed across the face and consistent smash factor. At 107 mph, I was always around 159-160, and at 110 mph I was in the mid 160s. It was the fastest driver I tested…and the most efficient. Now, to be fair, the Ping 440K was really close; at the end of the day, it came down to TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld and his ability to recreate what worked with the Ping and crank up the speed. It literally came down to 2 mph up and down the face. Toughest driver decision I’ve ever made. Qi4D has that advantage with the quad-weight system; if you get a fitter who knows what they are doing, having that many levers to pull is a huge advantage.

PING G440 Custom Hybrid

PING G440 Custom Hybrid

The G440 hybrids appeal to a variety of skill levels, each engineered to deliver different ball- flight characteristics – from the slightly fade-biased 2 hybrid for off-the-tee performance to the draw-inducing 5, 6 and 7 hybrids that help optimize gapping. They all share a new, shallower and thinner face design, which improves face contact for more ball speed and higher-launching shots that hit and hold the green.  FLIES HIGH LANDS SOFT Optimized launch and spin ensure distance with stopping power.  FREE-HOSEL DESIGN Saves weight to lower CG, optimize launch/spin and increase forgiveness.  ROUNDED SOLE  Ensures pleasing face angle in all hosel settings  CARBONFLY WRAP  Lightweight carbon crown saves weight to increase MOI, lower CG.

Why it’s in my bag: Security blanket. I’ve had this in the bag for two seasons now, and it’s become my favorite club. It can get up, go down, hold ball speed up and down the face, and it spins. It’s the most efficient 4H I’ve ever tested, and I really tried to kick it out. Contenders were Cobra OPTM (really close) and a TaylorMade Qi4D (also really close). Where they fell short was on their ceiling, with the 430, I can chip it and hit it 205, or munch it and hit it 225. The other had the floor, but the ceiling was 218. I’ll take the extra few yards.

Cobra 3DP Tour Custom Irons

Cobra 3DP Tour Custom Irons

The KING 3D Printed TOUR irons utilize 3D printing technology to unlock a new realm of performance. Their one of a kind design features the most forgiving blade shape on the market, delivering the forgiveness that aspirational players need, and the sleek looks and soft feel that better players desire. 3D PRINTED STEEL CONSTRUCTION Each iron is fully 3D printed from 316 stainless steel. 3D printing provides significant advantages over traditional methods of casting and forging, unlocking more design freedom and significant performance improvements. FORGIVING PLAYERS BLADE SHAPE 3D printing has unlocked new design possibilities, enabling COBRA engineers to create a compact blade shape with the mass properties (high MOI, low CG) of a game improvement iron without sacrificing looks and soft feel that better players demand. INTERNAL LATTICE STRUCTURE COBRA took a muscle-back blade shape (similar in size and shape to the KING TOUR iron), and transformed the inside of the blade into a complex internal lattice structure to reduce the weight of the club by 33%. That discretionary weight was repositioned to optimize feel, CG position, and MOI.

Why it’s in my bag: Look, feel, perfect amount of offset, and north-to-south dispersion. The Cobra 3DP Tour has an awesome low-face miss, and I appreciate the fact that when I do smash one, spin stays in a great spot. Typically, irons like this lose spin when you chip it or if you try to hammer one. These do nothing of the sort. The Srixon ZXi5 5-iron is in there for pure ball speed and gapping. I wanted something with a similar offset to my Cobras, but also cranked the ball speed up a bit to gap into the Ping G430 4H. I was getting 133-135 mph consistently with the Srixon vs anything else. Same Idea with the Srixon UT, it’s a 15th club that goes in when I need a lower-launching, hotter 4-iron.

SM11 provides a leading combination of lofts, bounces, and grinds to promote solid contact (between grooves 2-5), predictable performance, and the confidence to take on whatever the shot demands. Grind Comparison Consistent CG Location For a given loft, SM11 features the same CG location in all grinds, resulting in a controlled, consistent launch angle. No matter which sole design fits your swing or course conditions, your launch window is locked in—leaving you free to choose the lofts and grinds that work for you. A Smarter Way To Spin The new Vokey Spin System combines an angled face texture, shot-specific groove shapes, and deeper spin milled grooves to deliver the right amount of spin from any lie, in all conditions

Why they’re in my bag: When PGA Tour Aaron Dill dials you in, there is kind of nowhere else to go. As a player who always wants to hit his wedges down, the SM11 brought down my launch by about 2-3 degrees with a ton of spin. Couple that with the new Callaway CTX ball, and it’s a no-brainer.

Why it’s in the bag: I judge all putters by two things: aim and contact. That’s it. My putter debate was between two options. A one-off Scotty Cameron that may still find its way in, but the Spider Tour X was apples to apples with the Scotty across the board — but with a softer pure roll insert. The soft face enabled me to dial in my speed a bit. I played an Odyssey Jailbird with MicroHinge for about 2+ years, so a soft face is preferred. I play a heavy putter, 650g total, as I want the putter to feel draggy or heavy down the line, which enables me to use my shoulders more. When I can’t feel a heavy head, my hands take over and chaos ensues.
