Matt Every reveals PGA Tour fines, discusses epic club toss

Colt Knost asked Matt Every the question golf fans have been wondering for years: “How many times were you fined on the PGA Tour, and how much total?”

Every exhaled to think.

“I don’t know the exact total number of fines, or the dollar amount,” said Every, the guest on the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast. “I know my biggest one was I think I got 20 [thousand] twice. And then like a couple, handful of 5s.”

“What were the 20s for?”

“Not listening to the 5s,” he said. [Laughs]

Every played in 279 PGA Tour events and won twice (the Arnold Palmer Invitational back-to-back in 2014 and 2015) and made over $10 million in career earnings, but he was also known for his fiery on-course demeanor.

Every said his famous club toss at the AT&T Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest in 2019 led to one of the bigger fines.

He was playing well that week and was going low during his second round, but on the par-5 14th hole a drive he thought cleared a middle bunker — which would have left just a 6-iron in for his second shot — buried in the bunker lip.

“I didn’t know how to handle it at the time,” Every said. “I hacked this thing out, and like 10 yards was the most I could get out of it, and just blacked out for a second.”

Every hurled his club into the ether. The good folks at Getty Images must have thought it was such an impressive toss they made an entire photo sequence of it.

Every said some of the fines were due to tournament volunteers reporting him, and he also said PGA Tour rules official Stephen Cox always seemed to be around when Every was fuming, joking that Cox would put camo on and wait in the trees for Every to slip up.

“There would be times where like I’d miss a putt or I’d pull an iron shot and I’d look and I’d see Steven up on the hill and he’s watching me like 20 seconds after this ball already left the face,” Every said. “And I would yell at him and be like, ‘You want me to throw it? Or you waiting for me to do this? Cause I will do it. I’m crazy enough to do this right now.'”

Every, however, says his club-throwing days are behind him and the memorable toss from the Byron Nelson is probably the last one he’s had. These days he’s a host of “The Drop” on Golf Channel and golf analyst for the PGA Tour and ESPN. You can listen to the complete interview with Every here or watch on YouTube below.
