Was 2025 the year of “zero torque?” If the litmus test is Fairway Jockey’s best-selling putter, the answer is a resounding YES.
The TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT (“zero torque”) putter was released just before the start of summer. TaylorMade underwent an 18-month reengineering process of the existing Spider model — a model that had a long-established reputation for reliable roll, stability and alignment — to create the 5K-ZT. The TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT was an immediate hit with consumers and quickly became the year’s top-selling putter.
What makes this model so unique? The putter features a toe-up, or ‘face-forward’ balance configuration, said TaylorMade director of product creation for woods and putters Andrew Oldknow in a press release.
“This design minimizes torque and reduces the need for hand manipulation, promoting a more consistent stroke,” he continued. “As a result, the putter face remains squarer to the target line throughout the putting motion, enhancing directional control and building confidence at address and through impact.”
Additional attributes include a unique hosel configuration and new sole curvature to help accommodate different player types and ball positions, with the end goal of allowing golfers to find a consistent and repeatable stroke. To aid with alignment, milled lines the width of the golf ball were added to help golfers center the club behind the ball with ease.
