Jamie Carragher has strongly questioned Ruben Amorim’s suitability to manage Manchester United following controversial post-match comments by the Portuguese coach.
The former Liverpool defender described Amorim as “not good enough” to lead the club. He added that Amorim was “barely competent enough to be a Premier League manager.”
Amorim’s future came under renewed scrutiny following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
After the match, Amorim stressed that he was the club’s manager rather than simply a head coach.
The remarks emerged amid reports of growing tension between Amorim and the club’s hierarchy.
They also followed suggestions that United failed to fully support him during the January transfer window.
Carragher said Amorim was in no position to challenge those who appointed him.
“I don’t think he is in any position whatsoever to be questioning the people who appointed him,” Carragher said.
“Because he’s not good enough.”
“He’s not good enough to be Manchester United’s manager.”
“He’s barely competent enough to be a Premier League manager right now.”
Carragher suggested Amorim’s frustration could stem from two possible sources. He said it could relate either to a lack of backing in the transfer market or internal concerns over tactical inconsistency.
Carragher pointed to Amorim’s frequent changes between defensive systems. He noted that United appeared to make progress using a back four before reverting to a back five.
The Wolves performance, he said, was possibly the worst display seen against that opponent this season.
Gary Neville also addressed Amorim’s comments during his podcast.
Neville suggested something significant had shifted behind the scenes during the previous week.
“It looks to me that he is not happy with something in the hierarchy,” Neville said.
“Obviously, something is annoying him.”
Neville added that Amorim appeared to be seeking broader authority beyond coaching responsibilities.
He said the modern use of the term “manager” is increasingly rare within elite clubs.
Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League last season.
They have continued to underperform despite not competing in Europe this term. United have won just one of their last five matches. That run has left them sixth in the Premier League table.
They sit three points outside the Champions League places. Amorim is expected to clarify his comments at his next press conference ahead of the Burnley fixture.
