Aston Villa players power rankings: December’s winners and losers

Aston Villa fans have given their player ratings throughout December and our final power rankings of 2025 have identified a surprising Player of the Month.

Villa produced a blistering month by winning all of their Europa League and Premier League fixtures before defeat in the last game against Arsenal. It’s been a thrilling ride, and your Villa player ratings reflected another very positive month..

It’s a bit of a mixed bag because of mathematics (you can see what I mean in the October power rankings) but our AVF Power Rankings are really starting to take shape in 2025/26.

The process is simple: each month, we’ll be taking an average of your post-match player ratings (scored out of 10) for the matches played in that month and ranking the players based upon those averages.

Here’s December.

1 | Pau Torres (8.0)

Villa’s left-sided centre-back only managed two games in December before he was injured, but averaged 8.0 against both Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal at the start of the month.

2 | Morgan Rogers (7.3)

Rogers is back to his best and has been a vital player for Villa since finding his feet in the 2025/26 season. He’s scoring and making goals and, crucially, taking the game to opponents no matter who they are.

=3 | Youri Tielemans (7.0)

Tielemans ended December with a couple of uncharacteristically weak performances but posted an average of 8.5 in Villa’s win against Arsenal at the start of a generally solid month in two different positions.

=3 | Ian Maatsen (7.0)

With Torres unavailable, part of the solution in the second half of December was to bring Maatsen in to provide some extra dynamism at left-back. He responded with his most consistent month since joining the club.

5 | Amadou Onana (6.8)

Another player who’s now injured, Onana’s impact in December was undeniable. The effect of his absence in the first half against Chelsea and the second half away at Arsenal was clear for all to see.

6 | Matty Cash (6.7)

Ranging from 5.7 to 8.2, Cash hit the heights again in December and was especially good against Brighton and Arsenal in the first week of the month. Remains, for me, one of Villa’s best players this season.

=7 | Boubacar Kamara (6.6)

By no means perfect in December but Kamara is so good that it’s actually noticeable. Villa missed him massively in the away game against Arsenal and the first game of January showed why.

=7 | Ollie Watkins (6.6)

They weren’t all in December but Watkins has scored six goals in four games in the Premier League. He’s looking like a threat and scoring all kinds of goals again. It’s been a while but it’s good to see.

=9 | Victor Lindelöf (6.5)

A deadline day free transfer and it’s turned out that Villa needed him. He’s been a linchpin of Villa’s defence during their winning run and any suggestion he was a poor signing has been dismissed.

=9 | Emiliano Martínez (6.5)

Some good. Some very good. Some bad. Some very bad. Repeat.

11 | Lucas Digne (6.4)

Digne has found himself out of the team more because of his profile than because of anything to do with his performances. He’s some player to bring off the bench to help protect a lead.

=12 | Ezri Konsa (6.3)

Like Tielemans, Konsa turned in a couple of performances that were unusually flappy but the best English centre-back in the Premier League was never likely to wobble for long.

=12 | Emi Buendía (6.3)

Little Emi’s direct impact on matches might have waned a little after he burst back onto the scene but if Villa achieve anything by one or two points this season, his goal against Arsenal will go down in history.

=14 | John McGinn (6.2)

The Villa captain’s levels were good throughout December but Arsenal away demonstrated – perhaps even confirmed – that the team needs a more physically robust presence in the middle of the pitch. Unai Emery will find a spot for him regardless.

=14 | Donyell Malen (6.2)

Malen has continued to contribute even as Watkins has re-emerged, scoring a vital goal against Brighton to keep Villa’s winning run rolling at the start of the month.

=14 | Marco Bizot (6.2)

Decent enough when called upon. Feyenoord wasn’t the norm but nobody thought it was – Bizot is a very good back-up and was needed in December but if you’re expected 8/10 every time, you’re going to be disappointed.

=14 | Lamare Bogarde (6.2)

Bogarde finds his way onto the pitch in near enough every match now, which is a mark of Emery’s faith in him and of his status as the top young player in the Villa ranks.

18 | Evann Guessand (6.1)

Having arguably played himself out of a place at the Africa Cup of Nations, Guessand was called in as a reserve and remains in Morocco. Emery seems to value a lot of what he does. I think we need to see much more from him.

19 | Jadon Sancho (5.9)

Manchester United loanee Sancho has just started to make his presence felt in flashes, not least with Villa in the lead and looking for a goal via a spark rather than concerted attacking pressure.

=20 | Andrés García (5.0)

Returned from injury in December but has played a total of 31 minutes.

=20 | George Hemmings (5.0)

Made his Premier League debut against Arsenal in the final game of 2025.

=20 | Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba (5.0)

Another Premier League debutant at the Emirates Stadium.
