Aston Villa team news as Unai Emery makes ONE change against Liverpool

Manager Unai Emery has named his team for Aston Villa’s Premier League match against Liverpool this evening.

Villa will attempt to extend their winning run in the Premier League to five matches at Anfield while Liverpool, whose form has been a long way short of the performances that won them the league in 2024/25, want to avoid their fifth league loss on the bounce.

With no midweek fixture for Villa, Emery has been able to name a mostly unchanged team for tonight’s game. Emi Buendía picked up an injury against Manchester City six days ago and is expected to be back in contention from Thursday.

Emery opts for stability

That enforced change gave Emery some decisions to make not only in the sense that Buendía needed replacing directly. It had a knock-on effect across the three players behind striker Ollie Watkins and in the double pivot in midfield.

Emery went for the exactly eleven we predicted for tonight’s match, bringing Evann Guessand into the vacant spot with a view to keeping the Villa team defensively robust from the front.

He’ll be joined by Morgan Rogers and captain John McGinn, leaving Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana in the middle.

I think the motivation behind tonight’s selection is simply to have Kamara, Onana and McGinn all on the pitch however it can be made to make sense.

With Harvey Elliott ineligible to play against his parent club at Anfield tonight there’s a place on the bench for 18-year-old Ben Broggio.
