Unai Emery and two of his Aston Villa players have been nominated for Premier League awards for the month of October.
Villa have turned their form around after a disappointing start to the season. The Premier League awards were miles from the minds of anyone at the club in August and September but improved performances and better results have caught the eye on October.
Emery is up for the Manager of the Month award after Villa won three out of three against Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. The other nominees are Andoni Iraola (AFC Bournemouth), Ruben Amorim (Manchester United) and Mikel Arteta (Arsenal).
Villa right-back Matty Cash has deservedly been nominated for the Player of the Month award along with seven others.
They are: Bruno Guimarães (Newcastle United, Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Eli Junior Kroupi (Bournemouth), Bryan Mbeumo (Manchester United), Igor Thiago (Brentford), Nordi Mukiele (Sunderland) and Jurrien Timber (Arsenal).
Finally, Emi Buendía is in with a chance of winning Goal of the Month with a helping hand from Cash and Lucas Digne for his brilliant goal against Tottenham Hotspur.
The seven goals he’s up against were scored by Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert of Bournemouth, Zian Fleming and Loum Tchaouna of Burnley, Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and new Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade.
Five different Villa bosses have won the Manager of the Month award a total of ten times between them.
Brian Little was the first in January 1995 and his successor, John Gregory, won in both September 1998 and September 2001.
Martin O’Neill won the award four times between April 2007 and April 2010. Dean Smith was Manager of the Month in December 2020 and Unai Emery picked up the award in April 2023 and December 2023.
The Player of the Month award has been won nine times by seven players.
Ashley Young won it three times as a Villa player and there was one each for Dwight Yorke, Dion Dublin, Gareth Southgate, Paul Merson, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke.
The Goal of the Month award was introduced in the 2016/17 season, which Villa supporters will recognise as the first season of the Premier League in which Villa did not participate.
Two Villa goals have won the award.
Danny Ings scored a gorgeous bicycle kick against Newcastle United and was given the first award of a new season in August 2021.
Villa’s other Premier League Goal of the Month was Jhon Durán‘s outrageous ripsnorter against Everton in September 2024.
