Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, who suffered an injury earlier this year, has indicated he is open to playing in different positions after an impressive showing for the Netherlands.
The 24-year-old delivered a commanding performance in the Oranje’s 4-0 win over Malta during World Cup qualifying.
His display highlighted his football intelligence and adaptability, marking him out as one of Europe’s most versatile young players.
Timber’s rise has been remarkable, especially after overcoming a significant injury that sidelined him for most of last season.
He has since regained form at both club and international level, catching the attention of Dutch manager Ronald Koeman.
In his first start for the Netherlands in nearly a year, Timber was deployed as a central defender alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking after the match, Timber emphasized his flexibility, stating, “I play wherever the manager needs me. I think it’s one of my strengths that I can play in multiple positions.”

He was quick to credit Van Dijk for their defensive performance, saying, “I’ve been able to prove myself at centre-back, and of course, someone like Virgil makes it easier. We kept a clean sheet, we’re scoring good goals. So we can be quite satisfied.”
Timber’s adaptability makes him a key figure for both Koeman and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
While he has often featured as a right-back at Arsenal, Timber’s ability to switch positions seamlessly provides tactical options.
Arsenal are reportedly in contract talks with Timber, with Arteta keen to finalize the deal quickly.
The Spaniard highlighted Timber’s value, saying, “Yes, 100 per cent. And especially the players that they want to be with us, and we want to attach our futures with them. And Jurrien is a really good example of someone that, especially under very difficult circumstances with a very early injury in his career, with a really difficult injury, the way he’s come back and what he’s doing for the team, it’s phenomenal.”
Arteta added, “I think he’s a really good example of another one that hopefully is going to have a long career with us. I rate him a lot. I don’t know how people rate him, but hopefully a lot because when you’re talking about a total player, he has almost every quality that you want from a defender.”
Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere also singled out Timber as a standout performer.
Speaking on Drive, Wilshere said, “The one that I really love is Timber. I think, apart from number nine and in goal, he gives you something in every single position. He’s aggressive, he wins his duels, he looks like a leader.”
Arsenal’s squad has seen notable summer additions, including Viktor Gyokeres, while Martin Odegaard continues to lead the midfield and William Saliba anchors the defence.
Yet Timber’s quiet influence is seen as a critical factor in Arsenal’s ongoing title challenge.
Since joining from Ajax, Timber has made 60 appearances for the Gunners despite missing significant time due to injury.
This season, he has started six of Arsenal’s eight Premier League and Champions League matches, seamlessly adapting to Arteta’s tactical plans.
With confidence high and a new contract likely, Timber is expected to start against Fulham on October 18, providing Arsenal with valuable flexibility in both central and wide positions.
