It may be a sleepy-season event, but this week’s Baycurrent Classic boasts a handful of headliners — no matter it’s being played in Japan.
The Baycurrent Classic — previously the Zozo Championship — kicks off Thursday at Yokohama Country Club in Yokohama, Japan, although that means it’s a Wednesday night start in the States.
Xander Schauffele is the betting favorite at +1000 with Collin Morikawa (+1600) and Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) rounding out the favorites.
Chris Gotterup, Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Adam Scott, Gary Woodland and Billy Horschel are also in the field.
Some of the players competing are heading over from last week’s Sanderson Farms in Mississippi, while others had time off or were at the Ryder Cup.
For this week’s Fanatics Sportsbook bet of the week, Subpar podcast co-host Colt Knost likes the chances of a pro who was at last month’s Ryder Cup — but wasn’t a player.
“I’m going to see if these Ryder Cup guys can keep it going, because this guy won at his last start but he didn’t play at the Ryder Cup, he was a vice captain,” said Knost, speaking of European vice-captain Alex Noren, who won the BMW PGA Championship in the lead-up to the Ryder Cup. “He’s going to go over there and hit nine billion balls and be ready to go.”
Knost picked Noren to top 10 (+220), although Noren also has the fourth-best odds to win at +2200.
For his pick, Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz picked Eric Cole to top 20 (+210).
“I’m going to go with a guy who just played this last week and played some good golf,” Stoltz said. “Eric Cole coming off a top 10 at the Sanderson. … I know it’s long travel and all of that; I don’t know whether or not to pick the top guys — what’s their interest level? — or the guys who just played well over here but are traveling, I don’t really know but I’m going with Eric Cole.”
You can watch the first round of the Baycurrent Classic starting at 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday on Golf Channel.
