Aston Villa are winless in the Premier League and yet to score a goal. Four matches can be a blip but the pressure is on as they face Sunderland on Sunday.
Villa finally scored on Tuesday. Harvey Elliott didn’t catch his shot properly but it had enough legs to hit the net thanks to a goalkeeping error in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Brentford. Villa ended up going out on penalties to add to the black cloud engulfing the club.
There were some green shoots in the performance at Brentford. Villa play with a certain shape but manager Unai Emery made some noteworthy adjustments that seemed, slowly, to be squeezing improvement from the system and the players.
How that manifests in a Premier League fixture is anyone’s guess. The margin for error is getting smaller by the week.
Three of the Premier League’s fixtures this weekend will be played on Sunday. Arsenal v Manchester City is the 4.30pm kick-off and there are two in the earlier slot after seven games are played on Saturday.
Sunderland v Villa will kick off at 2.00pm on Sunday 21st September.
Sunderland v Villa will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event.
It will also be available on NOW and on Sky’s assortment of streaming apps including Sky Sports+ and Sky Go.
