Aston Villa are monitoring the situation of Paris Saint-Germain attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in, according to reports.
Villa are just one of the clubs with Lee on their radar and Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, is already working on the possibility of signing the Champions League winner.
Lee is understood to be keen to play more football and Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Napoli are among the clubs credited with an interest in giving it to him.
According to Fichajes, Monchi sees the South Korea international as a key addition to the Villa squad and is ready to join the race for his signature in the January transfer window.
“Monchi is confident that [Lee] can flourish in Birmingham. The sporting director believes that under [Unai] Emery’s guidance, the player will reach a higher level,” reports Fichajes.
“Aston Villa believe [Lee] can be the key to completing their attack. Emery values his versatility and ability to move between the lines, something that is very useful in his system.
“Lee’s immediate future will depend on the talks between PSG and Aston Villa. If an agreement is reached, the young striker could leave Paris for Birmingham in the coming months.”
Lee is apparently growing restless with his minimal role at PSG. Despite recognition from his manager, the 24-year-old is considering pushing for a move elsewhere.
Luis Enrique values Lee highly. Back in 2023, he said of the former Valencia and Mallorca man: “Lee is a player who may be a little unknown to those who don’t follow La Liga. He is a superstar in South Korea. He is a very important player for us, who can play on the right wing, left wing, midfield, and several other positions. He also defends.
“He has significant technical abilities, and Lee is a player who sacrifices himself for the team. It’s very nice to have such a young player with so many qualities. He is also smiling, funny, and nice. He really has it all.”
Lee’s PSG contract runs to the summer of 2028 so Villa would have to work hard to do a deal in January. A loan to the end of the season could be an option, but PSG’s preference in this regard is not known.
The South Korean moved to Paris in 2023 and Luis Enrique is known to be a big admirer. PSG are loaded with talent and Lee, at a key juncture in his career, isn’t playing as much as he wants.
He has played 89 times for PSG, making 24 goal contributions in all competitions. He hasn’t made an appearance since he came off the bench against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup in August.
