Aston Villa fans have had their say on Saturday’s Premier League loss at Brentford and delivered a barrage of 3-star and 4-star player ratings.
Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media and Matchday LIVE throughout the 2025/26 season.
The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.
These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.
Emiliano Martínez – 4.6 – MOTM
It’s no surprise that this awful performance led to an incredibly low set of player ratings or that the goalkeeper edged out his teammates to become the second stopper in a row to claim our Man of the Match crown. Doing it with an average rating under 5 is some going, mind. I thought he was a little better than that.
Matty Cash – 4.1
Another week, another example of Villa’s right-back being part of a poor team performance but by no means the worst contributor to it. My personal ratings were higher across the board but I had Cash among the better players in a bad bunch too.
Tyrone Mings – 4.2
Mings has been slapped with some of the blame for Brentford’s goal, and while I think that’s a bit of a stretch, I do see the case for that view. In every other regard, I had Mings as my Man of the Match. I thought he was defending on his own for most of the game and did it pretty well.
Pau Torres – 3.0
Torres was appalling against Brentford. He was at fault for the goal and was running through treacle against a Bees attack that’s quick but not as quick as he made it look. A woeful display and there’s no excusing it. He’ll be back on the bench next Sunday and rightly so.
Lucas Digne – 3.5
I don’t remember a lot from Digne in this game apart from Dango Outtara showing him up in a one-on-one in the first few minutes. Ian Maatsen will be demanding a start against Crystal Palace and he probably should be given it.
Amadou Onana – 3.2
Too often sloppy in possession. Too infrequently dominant without the ball. Onana is a talented footballer with incredible physical presence but when he hits a bad spell, he hits it full in the face.
Boubacar Kamara – 3.6
Like our voters, I thought Kamara was doing marginally better than his teammates before he went off injured. At that time, Villa were slowly starting to gain some territory in the Brentford half and Kamara was the anchor for that. I didn’t grade him due to a lack of minutes. Averaging just above 3.5/10 seems a little harsh.
Youri Tielemans – 4.3
Tielemans hasn’t been done any favours at all by his manager so far this season. He’s started both games out of position and isolated by a bad team performance. On Saturday, he got a chance to show what he can do when he’s played in the right place and it was slightly better.
Morgan Rogers – 2.6
Rogers has been pilloried by Villa supporters since the Brentford game and the gap between his ability and performance in these two games has been extraordinary. I’m minded to think he’s not actually fit after his pre-season injury but it shouldn’t be overlooked that he had some stinkers last season too.
John McGinn – 4.1
It’s not working, is it? He’s not an inside-forward.
Ollie Watkins – 3.1
I found it difficult to gauge Watkins on Saturday. He looked capable of making something happen when he got on the ball in the attacking third but it happened so rarely that it’s impossible to say the striker had a good game. Villa just couldn’t get him into it.
Emi Buendía (on 16) – 3.4
He improved Villa’s shape and brought Tielemans into play simply by being on the pitch. He looked the likeliest player to give Villa some penetration but… well, he didn’t.
Ian Maatsen (on 64) – 3.7
Donyell Malen (on 64) – 3.4
Lamare Bogarde (on 74) – 3.4
Evann Guessand (on 75) – 3.7
