Mason Howell's clubs: Inside his U.S. Amateur-winning setup

High schooler Mason Howell capped off an incredible summer by dominating the 36-hole final of the U.S. Amateur 7 and 6 over Jackson Herington to win the Havemeyer Trophy.

Howell, who, at 18, was the youngest competitor at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, plays a full bag of Ping gear as one of the brand’s NIL ambassadors. He’ll now get a berth in next year’s U.S. Open, Open Championship and likely an invitation to the Masters.

The rising senior at Georgia’s Brookwood High School plays much of the company’s latest gear, including a G440 LST driver and Max 3-wood, an iDi driving iron and an Ally Blue 4 putter.

Howell is also still hanging on to Ping’s popular i230 irons, which are still easy to spot on Tour three years after their release.

PING G440 LST Custom Driver

PING G440 LST Custom Driver

The G440 driver family (MAX, LST, SFT) is optimized to deliver more ball speed through multiple advancements, including PING’s deepest CG in a driver to date and a shallower, thinner face, while continuing to ensure the game-changing forgiveness expected from a PING driver. The G440 LST (Low Spin) design appeals to players with faster swing speeds, providing lower spin and more control in 9° and 10.5° lofts with the three-position back weight. HIGHLY FORGIVING Lighter head weight allows for heavier back weight.  FASTER FACE  Shallow, thinner, face increases ball speed for more distance, higher launch.  SOUND DESIGN New shaping, carbon crown and internal ribs produce muted impact experience.  FREE-HOSEL DESIGN Saves weight to lower CG, increase forgiveness. Allows for more heel-side face flexing for consistent ball speed across face.

PING G440 Max Custom Fairway Wood

Driving iron: Ping iDi 3i 20˚
Shaft: Graphite Design Tour AD-DI Hybrid 95-X

PING iDi Custom Driving Iron

PING iDi Custom Driving Iron

The iDi marks a big step forward in driving iron and long-iron performance, giving better golfers the flexibility of three loft choices to fit their distance number and trajectory window. Loft offerings are optimized for launch and spin in 2, 3 & 4 irons with a thinner, forged maraging steel face that flexes to increase ball speed and distance. The 2 is a traditional driving iron, delivering low launch and spin. The 3 (mid launch, mid spin) is designed as a driving iron or long-iron replacement. The 4 launches higher with more spin, making it easier to hold greens and is also recommended as a long iron replacement. The 17-4 stainless steel head is both deeper front to back and shallower, which allows for 15% higher MOI on high/low impacts, and makes room for the new inR-Air technology. inR-Air is a pocket of air in the clubhead that damps sound and improves feel. The covered cavity and i-Beam structure help reduce vibration. In addition, iDi is shorter heel-to-toe to make it easier to tun over. For control in shot making, each iDi is approximately 1/4″ shorter and 1° flatter.
