There are two important weeks left in the PGA Tour season, although there’s still that one other crucial week coming up later in September — the Ryder Cup.
The BMW Championship, the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, kicks off this week at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., and the top 30 advance to the season-ending Tour Championship next week.
For American players, the top six in the Ryder Cup standings after the BMW auto-qualify for Bethpage Black at the end of September, and captain Keegan Bradley will make his six captain’s picks after the Tour Championship, making these next two weeks uber-important.
One player who needs to make a move is Patrick Cantlay, who is 15th in the Ryder Cup standings, and Subpar podcast co-host Colt Knost thinks Cantlay will do so this week. Knost picked Cantlay to top 10 (+180) for his Fanatics Sportsbook bet of the week.
“Just two events left in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, just two events left to see who is gong to make the Ryder Cup team,” Knost said. “I know how bad this guy wants to be on the Ryder Cup team, and he’s had some pretty good success around Caves Valley, and I think the time is now. He’s got to turn it on if he wants to be at Bethpage.”
Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz also picked a Ryder Cup hopeful in Andrew Novak (top 20, +140), who is 12th in the standings. Novak is coming off a T6 finish at the FedEx St. Jude last week.
“He’s had some crazy hot stretches this year followed by some not great stretches, but we learned recently he was battling a little injury,” Stoltz said. “Any time he has finished in the top 10, which he did this past week, he’s backed it up and never finished outside the top 20 the following week.”
Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite this week with +230 odds to win, with Rory McIlroy, who took last week off, holding the second-best odds to win at +750.
