Aston Villa attacking midfielder Jacob Ramsey is on the brink of a transfer to Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
Villa kick off the 2025/26 Premier League season at home against the Magpies on Saturday and are in negotiations over a move for Ramsey that now looks more likely than not.
The 24-year-old’s situation has been closely monitored by a number of Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window and has thus far declined to agree the new deal that’s on the table. He is now in the last two years of his contract and Villa’s transfer strategy means that essentially makes him available for the right bid.
Should Ramsey stay at Villa without agreeing terms on an extension, he would be much cheaper if he were to be sold this time next year than the £40 million Villa are looking for from Newcastle.
Ramsey would be a difficult sale for many Villa supporters to stomach. As a home-grown player and a Villa fan, Ramsey is symbolic of the connection between the team and the terraces as well as being rated highly.
The midfielder has played 167 times for Villa but could be tempted away by a better financial package and Champions League football this season. While a contract offer has been made to protect Ramsey’s value, there seems little appetite for Villa to stand in his way, especially with a World Cup right around the corner.
Ramsey represents ‘pure profit’ in terms of Premier League profit and sustainability rules and accepting an immediate £40 million boost makes a great deal of sense.
It’s widely reported that Ramsey is keen on a switch to Tyneside and playing under Eddie Howe. Talks are apparently underway and advanced enough that the clubs appear to be in agreement over the total fee and are negotiating the structural details of the deal.
The negotiation is expected to be completed before the deadline day. Once Ramsey wraps up the internal talk with the club, Eddie Howe’s side can start discussing the personal terms with the midfielder who bagged 17 goals for his boyhood club.
Ramsey, who has scored 17 times for his boyhood club, will be seen as an option for different moments at Newcastle, where Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes are available in his preferred position but will be part of a reconfigured attack and midfield set-up along with new signing Anthony Elanga in light of the probable exit of Alexander Isak.
