'Happy Gilmore 2' dinner scene included messed up lines, 1 surprise star

“Happy Gilmore 2” just made Netflix history with its record 46.7 million views in its first three days on the streaming platform. The sequel is a nostalgia-fueled, cameo-riddled ride filled with one-liners and a lot of professional golfers.

Most of those golfers make their entrance during a dinner scene for the winners of the Tour Championship. It’s there that Adam Sandler sits with Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Fred Couples, and Lee Trevino, while Jordan Spieth complains about the brand of gin in his drink and Xander Schauffele tries relentlessly to get a laugh for a “that’s what she said” joke.

Hunter Mahan, who served as Sandler’s body double in the movie, got a front-row seat to the dinner scene. Mahan joined the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar podcast to dish on his time on set with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.

Mahan admitted that Faldo and some of the other PGA Tour legends struggled to get their lines out at first, but overall, the golf pros did just fine working the silver screen.

“Seeing Mr.Nicklaus try to get his line out, like you’re so nervous that everyone is trying to spit their line out really fast,” Mahan said. “So they had to slow it down like, ‘Hey, we are just talking.’ … Just calming everyone down and almost getting in the conversation and relaxed and then going into their lines always seemed to make it work. But yeah. Faldo definitely struggled a little bit. Freddie was a pro. Lee was the best. Lee is telling stories and they had to be like, ‘Hey, Lee, we got to get acting here man, you got to be quiet.’ That’s Lee being Lee. He’s just the best.”

As for the current Tour pros, Schauffele was the unexpected start of the dinner scene.

“Everyone got it right,” Mahan said. “I thought Xander was really funny. Like he just nailed the facial expressions. Like, that was fun to see. There was a lot of trust between Adam and the writers and trying to make this thing funny and giving those guys some leeway with their lines and how we are going to do things, and they nailed it.

“I thought Xander was absolutely hilarious and absolutely killed it.”
