It’s fair to say there have been some distractions around Aston Villa’s Europa League campaign in the past week.
Villa have been caught in the middle of a ridiculous furore of everyone else’s making and the fact that there’s a different match right around the corner has been lost in the noise.
The Europa League has so far been a positive experience for Villa.
Their first win of the season came in their league phase opener at home against Bologna, their first away win in their second Europa League match at Feyenoord.
Those results became the basis of a five-match winning run that has the entire season looking much healthier after two months than it did after one.
On Thursday, Unai Emery and his Villa team face Eredivisie outfit Go Ahead Eagles, whose 2025/26 has so far been a mixed bag.
They’re in a similar spot to Villa after nine matches, winning two and sitting near the top of the bottom half of the table. In Europe, a home defeat and an away win makes them a tricky opponent to measure up.
Villa’s third league phase match will be played in the early Europa League slot on Thursday.
Television viewers in the UK can expect pretty minimal pre-match coverage at the earlier kick-off time but at least we can be done in time for dinner.
Go Ahead Eagles v Villa will kick off at 5.45pm on Thursday 23rd October.
Villa’s visit to Deventer to take on Go Ahead Eagles will be shown live on TNT Sports 1.
That means it will also be available on the Discovery+ streaming platform.
We’ll have our reaction to the Villa team news as soon as it’s announced and you can contribute to our fan-based player ratings after the match.
