When most recreational players purchase a new set of clubs, they don’t often think of purchasing anything beyond the legal 14-club allotment. And while the Rules of Golf stipulate that only 14 clubs may be in play at a given time, that doesn’t prevent you from having a larger stash of usable clubs in your arsenal to sub in and out at will.
In fact, many of the world’s best players swap different clubs in and out of their go-to set based on the course conditions they’re facing on a given day or week. And club-swapping isn’t a strategy that’s just for Tour players — it can benefit your game too.
“With all the variables that can come with golf course design, and even day-to-day weather, having options for what the golfer is facing on a particular day can require a different bag set up,” says True Spec’s Peter Weber. “Is the course asking for less than driver or 3-wood off the tee? Is it asking for long distance approach shots? Different turf conditions can call for different bounce and sole designs on wedges as well.”
So which extras should you consider carrying? Weber suggests looking at the top and bottom of your bag.
“Tour pros travel with several clubs to swap in and out of the bag,” he sayd. “Some carry a 7-wood, driving iron and a hybrid. Each can maybe have the same carry number, but serve a different purpose. The 7-wood or hybrid for higher flying shots that land softer on par-5s, and the driving iron for holes asking for less than driver or 3-wood. Different bounce and grind options on their lob wedges work on different turf conditions that they see in different parts of the country.”
Even if you tend to play the same course all the time, weather could have an impact on the bag set-up you go with on a given day.
“Basic course set-up can dictate which club swaps in, but so can wind conditions,” Weber says. “It comes down to the strategy that the person wants to apply to that certain round.”
